A Little About Myself.
I'm Laura, an MIT graduate, a former aerospace/software engineer, and a mom... who hopes and plans to become a psychologist when I grow up! I was born and raised in CT, and after moving across the country a few times for work, I've settled with my family in metro Atlanta. I am enthusiastic about architecture and design, travel, nature, exploration, and piano, but most of all I love working with children.
After college, I worked in industry for 14 years analyzing and designing algorithms for satellite and wireless networks. However, despite loving the people with whom I worked, something never quite felt right. I didn't return to work when my daughter was born in 2018. After several years of introspection, reflection, reading, and writing, I started my new journey as a graduate student at the University of Georgia in Educational Psychology- Gifted and Creative Education. I am currently awaiting news regarding acceptance into PhD programs in School Psychology, and have a new clarity of purpose in learning to help families with gifted and twice-exceptional children thrive.
As a child I was grade-accelerated, attended both private and public schools, and participated in a variety of programming aimed at talented youth. Through my experience as a child, a mom, an educational counselor for MIT Admissions, and my recent graduate study, I have gained significant understanding and perspective on family and school issues affecting youth with high creative and intellectual abilities. And I have been steadily growing my understanding and passion for how neurodiversity (e.g. ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, learning disabilities) tremendously affects a gifted child's experience.
As I await possible acceptance into School Psychology doctoral programs, I am excited to begin co-facilitating gifted parent support groups in the Atlanta area. I hope you will join us or share this with someone who might be interested!
